Cutting out the excess of money you have to spend on your groceries is not all that hard. But what good is it if you are going to sink into malnutrition and become generally unhealthy? So instead of simply cutting out foods willy-nilly, try to use strategies to find what you can remove without cutting into your nutrient base and ensure that you still get the proper amount of nutrients. It can be a little challenging at first. You may have to give up or replace some items you love. In the end, you will be better off for it, and be happy you made the commitment.

Lower Your Carbohydrates

The first thing you should do is to remove simple carbohydrates like sweets, white breads, and juices. Quite often, we buy far too many simple carbohydrates. Minimize the amount of carbohydrates you do buy. Items like breads, pastas, and rice should be lowered to about 25% of your usual amount. Make sure that you buy whole-grain versions of these items. You will get more nutrients from the whole-grain breads and pastas, while still receiving enough carbohydrates for your daily needs.

Remove All Sweets and Fillers

Whether it is ice cream, candy, or fried chips out of a bag – remove them immediately. All of these items are empty calories with little or no nutritional benefit. When you purchase these foods, you are simply paying for sugar and little more. If you want to lower your grocery bills, make these first to go. With desserts and sweets gone, you will have removed $15-30 per shopping stint, right off the bat.

Limit Your Boxed Items Purchases

Most foods that come in boxes are not as nutritious as the alternatives you can purchase out-of-box. For instance, frozen chicken or beef is often chalked full of preservatives or fats. Healthier cuts of the meat can be found in the butcher section or meat department of the store. Keeping away from boxed items also tend to be healthier choices as well as the cheaper choice. Not only are you keeping your bills lower,but also you will actually increase your overall nutrition.

Cut Your Food Budget by 80%

Figure out what your average expenditure is, and then cut that amount by 20%. When you force yourself to spend less, you will force yourself to also make choices as to what is most important. If nutrition is on your mind, then you will naturally cut out the items that do not give you the minerals you need.

Make sure that you keep a positive amount of macronutrients like protein, carbohydrates, and fats in your diet. It does you little good to cut out any of those items directly. With a little of everything, you will optimize your nutrient intake.
